FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

This chip is tiny. I mean Tom Thumb tiny. It's so small you can mistake it for a stamp. I like the colors though, the chip looks cool also.

USAGE:

Lets you play Import/Backup games on you Gamecube console. Homebrew support also.

The installation took 2 minutes to do and only 6 solder points, simple and easy is my style. The chip solder into the under side of the DVD drives. The chip can get soldered directly into it without the use of wires.

When you start up the GC, you will see the led on the chip blink RED then it will turn GREEN. This means that the drive is patched and you can now play backups/imports/homebrew.

This chip doesn't have anything else really, no OS, no extra features. It's only purpose is to boot homebrew/backups/imports. So no bells and whistles here.

PERFORMANCE:

Well my GC can boot DVD+R/DVD-R media but not DVD-RW/DVD+RW. Too bad there.

I tried my original games to make sure they worked and they did so I moved on to backups. I tried several buy they couldn't be read. This is cause I didn't adjust the POT of my drive. Once I adjusted it (about 187ohms resistance) All my backups played good on Sony DVD-R media. Now I tried imports which booted instantly. For homebrew discs you actually have to compile an ISO (won't explain how) and burn it on DVD media at your burners slowest speed. I used the FCEUtra emulator and i boot right away and all the NES games played at full speed.

Surprisingly ARMAX worked which I thought it wouldn't since most chips require you to patch the DOL file.

CONCLUSION:

This chip is the perfect fix for your backup/import needs. It boots fast and plays games flawlessly. definitely worth a buy.

PROS:

  • Great Price ($16.00)
  • Easy installation
  • ARMAX support
  • DVD+R support
  • No other modifications need for it to work

CONS:

  • Could have more features
  • Doesn't support disc browsing.
